Mahi Hāpai

This Whakawātea was written by Patrick Gemmell for our performance at Newlands Intermediate next week.  If the tune sounds familiar then that shows your age... It's sung to the tune 'Mysterious Girl' by Peter Andre.  Use it students to get the kupu and tune sorted for next week.
Translation of the kupu are above under the Whakawātea tab.

Te Hau o Te Tonga

Our group is learning a new Haka called Te Hau o Te Tonga.  This Haka was composed by Kiwa Andrews, Kāuwharu Mōrehu, Callum McDougal, Tāmati Rīmene-Sproat, Chance Fisher and Wiremu Adds.  Based on original ideas from Rākaitemānaia Gardiner-Parata and others.  The actions were choreographed by Tāmati Rīmene-Sproat, Chance Fisher and Wiremu Adds.

For the last few weeks the Tawa College MPA class have been coming down to our Intermediate for Tuakana/Teina sessions, teaching the Haka.  I've posted up this movie to help my boys learn the kupu and actions.  Nga mihi nui kia Kahu, Jordan, Raysharn, Grayson, Tamatea, Te Wairoa, Jordan, Bynn, Thomas and Kōkā Jojo Rangihaeata for lending me her awesome students.

Tae e Wha - TIS

This morning during Kapa Haka practice the wonderful Miss Warren came in to take some photos of our group.  Here we are in all our glory.  A massive Kia Ora to Mana Tiaki for letting us use their ataahua Piupiu for our Matariki Night and our Open Night.

Our group finally has a name - Tae e Wha

We finally came up with a name for our Kapa Haka group. 'Tae e Wha' which simply translates to; many creeds, colours and cultures.  To honour the group, we composed a waiata that encapsulates our aspirations for them as learners.

It's a waiata about students striving for knowledge and taking every opportunity to enable themselves to gain further understanding in their educational pathways. It is inclusive of all cultures, thinking perspectives and understandings, acknowledging the diversity of the group. It also ties in with the Tawa Intermediate motto of engage, grow and inspire!

Taiaha @ TIS

Kia ora Whanau... Some of you may be aware that a few weeks ago we started our first Taiaha lessons here at Tawa Intermediate.  We feel very blessed to have Matua Nori Ngaheu, Matua Tahi and Matua Paora to teach our community Taiaha from Te Whare Tu Taua O Aotearoa - Hawaiki Tu Ki Parirua.  The movie has been made to support the students in their learning so they can practise.
